| Description | Commodities can be bought and sold. If we buy a camera we do not usually think about who made it or from whom we bought it. Gifts are different. The object given is closely identified with the giver. Art and craft works present special problems. They certainly can be bought and sold. But at the same time they have some of the qualities of a gift. This is because we tend to be very interested in their creator. An art-work can be seen as a gift from the artist. The Trophy project set out to give away 4000 birds. The birds that remain still have a magical aura but we can no longer take them away. Meanwhile, the other birds have flown. |
