Abstract

The genus Facklamia forms a phylogenetically distinct lineage within the Gram-positive, catalase-negative cocci, and currently comprises six species of facultatively anaerobic bacteria (F. hominis, F. ignava, F. languida, F. sourekii, F. tabacinasalis and F. miroungae). Species of the genus are associated with warm-blooded animals and a variety of environmental sources. Due to their resemblance to aerococci and streptococci, Facklamia species are difficult to differentiate from other bacteria and can only be accurately characterized using 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis in combination with biochemical tests. This chapter provides a history of the genus Facklamia, along with details of traits that can be used to differentiate members of the genus from each other and related bacteria. Emended genus and species descriptions are provided. In addition, information is provided on the ecological, industrial and medical relevance of Facklamia species, with emphasis on the findings of recent sequencing studies in relation to the distribution of Facklamia species in different environments.
