Abstract

The intersections of production and audience research for reality television highlight how the visible performance of participants in a talent show is only part of the story of the labour of producing these performances. We find a ‘spectacle of labour’ (Barthes 1979) in talent show performances, indicating the physical and emotional labour of training that lies behind a screen performance. The contestants' entrepreneurial strategies using this opportunity was also seen, despite the claims by other scholars that those tended to be seen as victims of TV producers.
