| Abstract | Myocardial infarction remains a significant cause of mortality globally. High-sensitivity cardiac troponin is an essential criterion in the fourth universal definition of myocardial infarction. Our understanding of how troponin is released into the bloodstream has been updated over the last decade, with more sensitive assays. This review outlines the currently proposed mechanisms of release and elimination of troponin. Ultimately linking this updated understanding to critique the current universal definition of myocardial infarction and injury. |
