Abstract | Cria de favela: The term refers to someone who was born and raised in a favela. By identifying themselves as crias de favela, people can turn around the pejorative meanings attached to having favela origins in Brazilian cities where inequalities reflect and perpetuate the gap between the rich and the poor. But “cria” is also the third person conjugation of the verb “criar”, to create. Cria de favela conveys potential and creativity rather than incapability and apathy. It is no coincidence that the term has been embraced by favela media activists to describe who they are and what they do. Chapter 2 demonstrates the ways in which this repositioning from favelada(o)s to crias de favela is essential for understanding the media activism that stems from the Brazilian favelas. Medrado and Rega achieve this by connecting favela media activism to main axes that define South-to-South media activism: a) as a mobiliser of collective memories and histories; (b) as a creator of dialogical spaces; (c) as a reclaimer of media territories. The authors argue that life in the favelas has specificities that justify the use of the term favela media activism to describe how crias de favela express their agency and potency. |
