| Abstract | This chapter provides an overview of how translations of Marx and Engels’s works have served as political interventions across various historical contexts, with a particular emphasis on the Communist Manifesto. It traces the evolution of these interventions through three distinct periods. The first (1848–1917) focuses on translation as a tool for disseminating Marxist ideas, examining the various strategies employed to this end. The second period (1917–1989) explores translation as a means of constructing the Marxist canon, often through institutional efforts led by communist parties or states. It argues that post–World War II political developments, such as anti-colonial struggles, played a key role in challenging the canon. The final section (1989 to the present) surveys contemporary trends in the translation of Marxist texts, highlighting efforts to reclaim Marxism in response to new political contexts and agendas. |
