Abstract

In 1932, a group of students at the University of Athens, Greece, launched the Student Educational Association [Φοιτητικός Εκπαιδευτικός Σύλλογος], which set up an evening secondary school for the education of impoverished working youth. This paper responds to the conference theme of networks; it explores the reasons for this educational initiative and the ways it relates to contemporary discourses of social exclusion. This is the first time the group’s activities have been systematically studied. Through a close reading of unpublished documents at the archives of the University of Athens and the school’s own archive, the paper will present the educational activities of the group. Using the term ‘sociality’, it will discuss the cultural and implicitly political meanings the students constructed both for their actions and for the relations these actions created. It will be argued that a new social, political and educational context created new moral imperatives for the students to act and become educational and moral agents. The paper reveals different dimensions of students’ lives and increases our knowledge of the distinctive shapes that student participation in social life has taken, one that relates to social values, visions of the future and citizenship.
