Description | In this video, I discuss some of the findings in the Music Creators’ Earnings in the Digital Era, published by the Intellectual Property Office (IPO). For this brief discussion, I bring in some additional points not factored into this research, which should be useful for music creators. This report is for the UK economy but has usefulness for those in other territories, especially if you are a music creator and wondering what the world of income looks like. First, I discuss how the report defines a music creator. Second I discuss music income and the variety of ways that the survey respondents declared their income. Third, these earnings are then contrasted with those from Spotify and its own data from its Loud & Clear initiative. These figures are used to highlight clear issues with data from this source and how they tell a story. These income sources are then contrasted with those from David Byrne's 'How Music Works. Finally, I summarise the discussion and finish with two suggestions of actions that can be taken by practitioners. |
