Abstract | All phenomena in the social sciences are shaped by a complex web of variables, and using data to detect patterns and trends in such variables is important. However, particularly for policy analysis, a key challenge is to identify cause and effect relationships – that is, identifying which variables cause or drive the change in others. To identify a potential causal link between variables, the field of causal inference comes to rescue. Causal inference is not a specific statistical method, but a framework which provides the tools and assumptions required to answer causal questions. This chapter takes you through the processes involved in arriving at causal inferences through illustrations from the domain of education research. |
