| Description | Higher Education institutions have struggled to maintain high levels of student engagement and satisfaction in the face of growing economic, social and structural pressures. For example, in 2024, 68% of students undertook paid work during term time (HEPI, 2025), and independent study has decreased, from 13.6 hours per week in 2024 to 11.6 hours in 2025 (AdvanceHE, 2025). For that reason, courses/modules require learning environments, assessments, and materials that are flexible, accessible, and responsive to diverse learning preferences. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides a research-informed framework to address these systemic challenges by supporting students of all abilities to engage with content and demonstrate their learning in multiple ways. Grounded in three core principles: multiple means of representation, action and expression, and engagement. UDL has been widely explored across educational sectors. However, its application within business education remains underdeveloped, highlighting a timely opportunity for pedagogic enhancement. This 1-hour online workshop presents findings from a new co-created research project conducted at Westminster Business School (WBS), which examines students’ perceptions of UDL and its impact on their engagement, learning material preferences, assessment experiences, and motivational factors. The study draws on survey data from 71 undergraduate and postgraduate students (January–March 2025) and insights from 11 semi-structured interviews conducted between April and June 2025. Participants will explore how these student-informed findings can shape more inclusive module and course design, helping to address declining attendance and engagement while strengthening pedagogical practice. The workshop offers practical strategies for integrating UDL principles into learning materials, activities, and assessments to enhance curriculum accessibility, flexibility, and inclusivity in alignment with emerging evidence. |
