Abstract | This paper presents definitions of metaphor and metonymy designed to be useful for investigating how metaphor/metonymy is used by learners and how the use of metaphor/ metonymy changes as learners become more proficient. The definitions, using the ‘stack of coins’ model, see metaphor/metonymy working below the level of the whole word, interpreted using the physical and interpersonal context of the utterances. It is argued that metaphor/ metonymy is best seen as activity in the part of the mind concerned with metaphorizing/ metonymizing, an activity which connects with other functions of the linguistic mind. |
