Abstract

This paper describes a pilot study conducted in a classroom environment, in a local school over a three-week period. It compared the effect of two types of educational software in mathematics with a traditional approach on the learning outcome of a group of Key Stage 2 and Year 5 children. The children were exposed to two different types of software that dealt with the same subject matter in mathematics, data handling. A pre-test/post test design was used in order to assess the learning outcome. The results of this pilot study revealed statistically no significant difference in learning across the groups. However, the study did highlight a number of methodological issues that are discussed in this paper.
