Abstract

This chapter presents a single case study that builds on the experience of a female entrepreneur in the South African energy sector. This woman manages to circumvent the challenges posed by a lack of government support for social innovation by leveraging network embeddedness and social capital. In South Africa, female entrepreneurs often experience several challenges due to the institutional environment. This case study explores how discrimination based on race, gender, political affiliation and educational background may hamper government support for female entrepreneurs. Given the peculiarity of the South African institutional environment, which is strongly affected by apartheid, it is shown how social embeddedness and social capital can alleviate discrimination amongst female entrepreneurs.
